KABAR ALAM – Amid the chain of islands in the Thousand Islands, there lies a conservation area that plays a vital role in preserving wildlife: Rambut Island.
This small island is widely known as a wildlife sanctuary, serving as a habitat for various species of seabirds and other protected animals.
The area is home to diverse wildlife, including seabirds and the protected hawksbill sea turtle. The island is also equipped with a turtle hatchery facility aimed at safeguarding eggs from predators, ensuring more hatchlings successfully emerge and return to the ocean.

Rambut Island is officially designated as a wildlife reserve managed by the Natural Resources Conservation Agency Jakarta. Covering approximately 90 hectares, the area consists of both land and surrounding waters, each playing a crucial role in sustaining the ecosystem.
The island is recognized as a natural habitat for at least 73 bird species, particularly waterbirds that use the area as a nesting site and a stopover along the international migratory route known as the East Asian Flyway.
Beyond its bird population, Rambut Island features rich ecosystems such as mangrove forests, coastal forests, and lowland forests, which support a wide range of flora and fauna. Vegetation like Rhizophora mucronata and Morinda citrifolia dominates the landscape and plays a significant role in maintaining coastal ecological balance.
History of the Conservation Area
Efforts to protect Rambut Island date back to the colonial era. The island was first proposed as a conservation area by the Director of the Bogor Botanical Gardens to the Dutch East Indies government, aiming to protect breeding waterbirds in the region. In 1937, the island was officially designated as a nature reserve.
Over time, the area evolved into a wildlife sanctuary of great importance for conservation efforts in Jakarta and its surrounding regions.
As an uninhabited island, Rambut Island provides a relatively safe natural habitat for wildlife. Its large population of waterbirds has earned it the nickname “a bird paradise” within the Thousand Islands.

In addition to bird conservation, the island also supports the protection of other species such as the hawksbill sea turtle. Conservation programs focus on safeguarding turtle eggs until they hatch, after which the hatchlings are released back into the sea.
