KABAR ALAM - The National Waste Care Day 2024 (HPSN 2024) is commemorated throughout Indonesia on Wednesday, February 21, 2024.

The tragedy of the garbage landslide at Leuwigajah Landfill in Cimahi City, West Java, on February 21, 2005, marked the establishment of National Waste Care Day (HPSN) by President Joko Widodo and was first commemorated in 2006.

The heartbreaking event, immortalized as National Waste Care Day (HPSN), occurred due to heavy rainfall in February and a methane gas explosion in the garbage pile.

The garbage landslide from Leuwigajah Landfill struck the villages of Cilimus and Pojok, claiming the lives of 157 people.

In addition, two villages (Cilimus and Pojok) disappeared from the map due to the avalanche of garbage from Leuwigajah Landfill.

On HPSN 2024, the government declared the theme of HPSN 2024 as "Tackle Plastic Waste Productively."

Based on information obtained by KABARALAM.com from the written statement of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK) and re-uploaded on the Instagram account of West Java Environmental Agency (DLH Jabar) on Tuesday, February 20, 2024, the theme of HPSN 2024 is motivated by the ongoing issue of plastic waste, both nationally and internationally.

Threat of Plastic Waste

It is stated that the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) declares the amount of plastic waste entering aquatic ecosystems could nearly triple by 2040 if there are no efforts to prevent plastic pollution.

It is revealed that the amount of plastic pollution was around 9-14 million tons in 2016 and could potentially reach 23-27 million tons by 2040.
