KABAR ALAM - In year 2021, the Ministry of Environment and Forestry ( KLHK ) released the National Mangrove Map. From the map, it is known that the total area of Indonesia's mangroves is 3,364,076 hectares.
Of the 3,364,076 hectares of Indonesian mangroves, there are three classifications of mangrove conditions according to the percentage of canopy cover, namely dense mangroves, medium mangroves, and rare mangroves.
Referring to SNI 7717-2020, the condition of dense mangroves are mangroves with canopy cover greater than 70 percent, medium mangroves with 30-70 percent canopy cover, rare mangroves with canopy cover less than 30 percent.

Of the total area of mangroves in Indonesia covering an area of 3,364,076 hectares, the condition of dense mangroves are 3,121,239 hectares (93%), medium mangroves are 188,363 hectares (5%), and rare mangroves are 54,474 hectares (2%).
The government's focus in rehabilitating mangrove areas is in mangroves with rare cover condition. The division of roles in the rehabilitation of rare mangrove areas is carried out in accordance with the duties, principals, and functions of the relevant Ministries/Agencies.
The distribution of Indonesian mangroves with the highest dense cover was in Papua Province with a total area of 1,084,514 Ha and the lowest distribution of dense mangroves was in the Province of the Special Region of Yogyakarta with an area of 8 Ha.

The distribution of mangroves with the highest medium cover was in North Kalimantan Province with an area of 41,615 Ha and the lowest distribution of medium mangrove was in the Province of the Special Region of Yogyakarta with an area of 3 Ha.
The distribution of mangroves with the highest rare cover was in North Sumatra Province with an area of 8,877 Ha and the lowest distribution of rare mangroves was in Bali Province with an area of 75 Ha.
As for the total area of mangroves in Indonesia, it was identified that 2,261,921 Ha (79%) were inside forest areas and 702,798 Ha (21%) were outside forest areas.

Based on the existing data, the condition of dense mangroves outside the forest area is 586,054 hectares, medium mangroves outside the forest area of 86,834 hectares, and rare mangroves outside the forest area of 29,910 hectares.
Based on the condition and distribution of mangroves outside the forest area, it is known that mangroves with the highest dense cover are in East Kalimantan Province, the highest medium mangroves are in North Kalimantan Province, and the highest rare mangroves are in North Sumatra and Central Java Provinces.
