Tracing the Footsteps of the Guardian of the Spirits

KABAR ALAM - Garugiwa or Kancilan Flores is an iconic animal in the logo of Kelimutu National Park.

According to the belief of the Lio tribe, Garugiwa or the Kancilan Flores are the guardian birds of the spirits of Lake Kelimutu. People are forbidden to kill this bird because it is believed that it will get a disaster or accident.

The figure of the spirit bird is also mysterious because of its small size and rarely seen with the naked eye. Many visitors to Kelimutu National Park are increasingly curious about its existence.

The sound of the chirping of spirit birds can only be enjoyed from 06.00-10.00 AM. Its voice is also quite unique because it has approximately 15 types of chirps.

To keep this rare bird species sustainable, a population survey and distribution of Garugiwa or KancilanFlores was carried out in the Kelimutu National Park area, on 15 to 21 March 2021.

This activity aims to update data on the estimated population size of the Garugiwa or Kancilan Flores birds and their distribution within the Kelimutu National Park Area.
